When the news broke that monkeypox had reached the U.S., a new alarm was raised for a population already on edge from the Covid-19 pandemic. Although the virus is primarily found in west and central Africa, it has also been reported in a variety of countries around the world. It was first detected in captive monkeys in the 1950s, which garnered it the name monkeypox.
Monkeypox is spread when someone comes into contact with human, animal, or other materials containing the virus. It can be transmitted via respiratory droplets, broken skin, and more.
Symptoms of the virus are similar to those of smallpox but are typically much more mild. Initial symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headaches, and fatigue. Within a few days of the onset of those symptoms, a rash typically appears. The rash results in round, painful, fluid-filled sores that will eventually break open and scab. The process can take weeks to heal and until the lesions are completely healed, the virus can be spread to others.
Although there is no specific treatment for monkeypox, the CDC believes that because it is genetically similar to smallpox, antiviral drugs and vaccines for smallpox may be effective. Preventative practices are also of utmost importance. Avoiding contact with materials, people, and animals that may be infected is recommended, and shared spaces should be cleaned and disinfected to prevent the spread. Experts also recommend good hand hygiene and masking as preventative measures.
